Matthew Perry’s belongings, including sentimental items he kept from his time on Friends, have been auctioned off almost three years after his death

Belongings of the late Friends star Matthew Perry have been sold – almost three years after he tragically died from a ketamine overdose in the hot tub of his LA home at the age of 54.

Items from the Hollywood actor’s estate were auctioned off to raise money for the Matthew Perry Foundation, a charity set up after his death in October 2023 to de-stigmatise addiction and help people overcome substance abuse.

Among the items sold were two original artworks by iconic British graffiti artist Banksy – who famously keeps his identity hidden – which raised almost £1 million alone. They were the iconic Girl with Balloon piece from 2005 of a child reaching for a red heart-shaped balloon and Nola, a 2008 screen print of a young girl sheltering under an umbrella from the rain.

Following a bidding war, the Girl with Balloon eventually sold for a massive £889,979. While the lesser known Nola piece was bought for £88,979. The latter was the first Banksy that Matthew ever bought, according to Heritage Auctions in America who sold the pieces. Both have Banksy’s signature on them.

Other items sold at the auction included sentimental things Matthew had kept from his time on hit US sitcom Friends, which saw him play his most memorable character, Chandler Bing, from 1994 to 2004.

A script from ‘The Last One’ – the show’s final episode that aired on May 6, 2004 – that was signed by all the cast members including Matthew, Courteney Cox, Jennifer Aniston , Lisa Kudrow, David Schwimmer and Matt LeBlanc, sold for £70,000.

A replica of the ‘peephole’ frame in Monica and Rachel’s apartment went for £30,000. And personal items owned by the Batman fan, such as a custom The Dark Knight Rises watch, sold for £16,000.

The auction took place weeks after Matthew’s personal live-in assistant was sentenced to three years and five months in prison for injecting the drugs that killed him.

Kenneth Iwamasa said he had been giving Perry six to eight injections of ketamine per day in the last days of his life, and that Perry had told him: “Shoot me up with a big one” on the day he died.

“I’m so sorry to all of you. I’m just so sorry to have done illegal acts that I will forever regret. I will take it to my grave,” Kenneth said to Matthew’s family in an LA courtroom.

“I hope I’ll be a cautionary tale to someone who’s in my position to make better choices.”
