Jurgen Klopp has reached an agreement in principle to become the new coach of Germany.

Klopp was declared as “ready to take over” by the German Football Association (DFB) after Julian Nagelsmann resigned following Germany’s underwhelming performance at the 2026 World Cup.

Die Mannschaft were knocked out in the round of 32 as they lost to Paraguay on penalties.

Having exited the previous two World Cups in the group stage, Germany have still not won a World Cup knockout game since their victory in the 2014 final.

Former Liverpool manager Klopp has served as Red Bull’s global head of football since October 2024, but now looks set to come out of his managerial retirement to lead his country.

Klopp is in North America working as a pundit during the World Cup, and the DFB announced on Saturday that a meeting in the United States had resulted in an agreement over the key points of a contract.

A DFB statement read: “DFB President Bernd Neuendorf and DFB Vice President Hans-Joachim Watzke held their first in-depth talks with Jürgen Klopp in New York regarding his potential appointment as national team coach.

“During the constructive exchange, an agreement was reached on the key points of a potential contract. Talks will continue next week.

“Both sides are confident that the negotiations – subject to an agreement with Klopp’s current employer, Red Bull – can ultimately be successfully concluded.”

Should Klopp finalise a deal to take over, his first match in charge of Germany will come on September 24 when they face Netherlands in the UEFA Nations League.
