A star of US reality TV show franchise The Bachelor has revealed that he was diagnosed with an early stage of brain cancer after doctors found a ‘blueberry-sized lesion’

One of the stars from the US reality dating franchise The Bachelor has been diagnosed with a brain tumour. Joe Amabile, who appeared in both The Bachelorette and Bachelor in Paradise, told fans that he would have to undergo surgery to remove a ‘blueberry-sized’ tumour.

The 40-year-old said in a video on Instagram that the tumour was found after he went to get a preventative health scan: “So a little medical update. I didn’t share my Prenuvo results because they ended up finding a lesion in my brain. So then I had to go get a brain MRI, and there was a blueberry-sized lesion in my brain that looks to be a glioma, which is a tumour.

“So I now need to get brain surgery [in two weeks] to get it removed and get it tested, and then we’re gonna go from there. So it’s been a wild couple weeks. Definitely wasn’t expecting this.”

He added that he never thought he would be diagnosed with cancer and hoped the doctors would be able to remove the whole tumour during his operation. “I think it’s one of those things where you’re like, ‘Oh, something like this never happened to me,’ and here I am,” Amabile said. “They say it’s really early stages. I hope they are able to get it all, and I’m fine. But I will keep you updated.”

A glioma is a brain tumour that starts in the glial cells, which surround the neurones and protect the nerve cells. In the UK, around 2,200 cases are diagnosed every year, while 100,000 are diagnosed in the US.

Surgery can be used to remove as much of the tumour as possible and radiotherapy or chemotherapy is often used as a follow-up if a lot of the tumour remains.

In the caption, he added: “This past month has been a lot of ups and downs to say the least. After multiple scans and MRIs I have what looks to be an early stage brain tumor. In two weeks I’ll be undergoing a craniotomy to have it removed — yeah brain surgery.

“I’m doing my best to stay positive during this time and am lucky to have a lot of support from family and friends. I’ve gone back and forth about what I wanted to share on social media but ultimately this is now part of my life now, so might as well. Onto a new journey.”

Amabile first rose to fame on season 14 of The Bachelorette in 2018 and appeared in Bachelor in Paradise both in 2018 and 2021. He is married to Serena Pitt, 28, whom he met on his second stint on Bachelor in Paradise. His wife commented under his post: “You’re so strong and we’re going to get through this together. I love you.”

Away from The Bachelor franchise, Amabile, who fans dubbed ‘Grocery Store Joe’, competed on Dancing with the Stars. He competed on season 27 in 2018 and came fifth.
