The MRI on New York Giants‘ quarterback Jaxson Dart‘s left knee revealed an injury more severe than was believed on Monday night, per NFL insiders Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport.
It was reported that surgery was poossible and Dart could miss the remainder of the 2026 season. Giants head coach John Harbaugh would not confirm those reports.

“Evaluations are ongoing,” Harbaugh said. “We’ve learned a lot more.
“I’m not commenting on all the different reports. In due time, at the proper time everybody’s gonna know what the outcome is.
“When we know what direction we’re going to have to go or whatever it might be, we’ll announce that. But we don’t have that yet, so I don’t want to get out over our skis on that. I can’t really respond to every report that people make. We’ve got to kind of work on our own timeline here.”
Dart was injured on the Giants’ first drive of the game Monday night. While throwing a pass to tight end Theo Johnson, Dart was sandwiched between Los Angeles Rams‘ defenders Byron Young and Josaiah Stewart, with his left knee inverting awkwardly.

Dart limped off the field under his own power, and was on the sideline in street clothes during the second half of the 28-6 loss to the Rams. The injury was initially believed to be a sprained MCL.
“We can’t control things,” Harbaugh said. “We don’t have the ability to dictate as much as we’d like to any kind of outcome. So whatever transpires is what we’re going to have to respond to and react to.
“We’re going to have to meet those circumstances, whatever they are. And right now, that’s a range of things and we’re just going to have to see where we’re at. But we’re going to work really hard to prepare for those things and try to focus on the task at hand, which is we have five days till we play Tennessee Titans and we’ve got to be at our best as a team.
“We just got to prepare for the range of possibilities. And then once we know where we’re at, make a plan going forward, and that’s really what we’re going to do.”

ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that Dart could be facing surgery, and said that “Of all the QB injuries suffered in Week 2, Dart’s is turning out to easily be the most significant.”
Harbaugh said Tuesday that confirming any timeline for the severity of Dart’s injury was “not the right thing to do” because evaluations and decisions are still being made.
“In due time at the proper time, everybody’s going to know what the outcome is,” Harbaugh said. “But, while these conversations are being had, I don’t think that’s really fair to the person involved or the people involved to give a running report on where it stands or what those conversations are.
“It’s not the right thing to do. It’s when decisions get made and, and we know which direction we’re going to go, then heck yeah, we’ll let everybody know what they are. But until that happens I can’t breach those conversations.”

The Giants were looking like a potential playoff contender after Dart completed 23 of 29 for 230 yards and 3 touchdowns while also running 11 times for 54 yards in a season-opening 28-20 victory over the Dallas Cowboys. Now, the Giants are looking at having Jameis Winston start at quarterback for the remainder of the season.
The Giants have quarterback Jake Haener on their practice. They could bring back Brandon Allen, who was let go when rosters were trimmed to 53 players, as a third quarterback, or look elsewhere.
