Avengers: Endgame does the impossible and finally dethrones Avatar to become the highest grossing movie of all time. 2026 has been an eventful year of battles within the list of highest grossing movies worldwide. These include some mighty names such as the Michael Jackson biopic, Michael, collecting over $1 billion gross, Toy Story 5 with over $1.14 billion, and The Odyssey creeping up to the 11th position with more than $1.7 billion.
The latest one to skyrocket to the top within just months of its release was Spider-Man: Brand New Day collecting over $2.5 billion gross and reaching the 3rd spot on the list. There is further news regarding the movie also gearing up to have a re-release later this year before the events of Avengers: Doomsday.
This news surfaces after seeing the huge reception for the re-release of Avengers Endgame: Encore at the box office. Combined with the sales figures of its original release, the movie now recreates history by once again reaching the top position in the list of highest-grossing movies of all time. Avengers Endgame has now collected a total gross of $2.925 billion, overtaking Avatar at $2.923 billion.
The re-release was primarily done in an attempt to help create a bridge between the events of the film and the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday with the addition of some extra footage. During an interview, one half of the creators of the MCU, Anthony Russo, said, “The new scenes add depth to the Avengers’ story while teasing what’s ahead in Doomsday.”
He further added how important it was to connect with the fans and deliver an unforgettable experience. He said, “Audiences are coming to Avengers: Doomsday with a lot of emotional connection to prior experiences within the MCU,”. He further continued, “And we have those same emotional connections. So, we want to honour that and figure out how we are using that value and that emotional investment to go somewhere new.”
It is left to be seen if Avengers: Doomsday will be the one to dethrone Endgame in the future.
