The much-anticipated collaboration between Mohanlal and Jithu Madhavan appears to have come to an end before it could take shape. The filmmaker, known for directing the Malayalam hits Romancham and Aavesham, has confirmed that his proposed film with the superstar has been dropped, citing scheduling constraints and the extensive time required to complete the project.
In December 2024, reports emerged that Jithu was working on a film with Mohanlal, with Sree Gokulam Movies attached as the production house. The prospect of the director joining hands with one of Malayalam cinema’s biggest stars generated considerable interest, particularly after Aavesham established Jithu as a filmmaker with a distinctive approach to commercial entertainment.
However, in a recent interview with Galatta Plus, Jithu clarified that the project would not be moving forward. He also ruled out the possibility of taking the same screenplay to another actor, explaining that the story had been conceived specifically with Mohanlal in mind.
“When I write a screenplay with Mohanlal in mind, I cannot suddenly switch to somebody else and write it for them.”
The filmmaker’s comments suggest that the decision was driven by practical considerations rather than a lack of interest in the collaboration itself. While the project will no longer proceed in its proposed form, Jithu’s explanation offers clarity on why the much-discussed pairing will not materialise for now.
An Ambitious Screenplay Meets Scheduling Hurdles
Elaborating on the circumstances that led to the film being shelved, Jithu said the scale of the production posed a significant challenge. The screenplay required a lengthy shooting schedule, with several action sequences adding to the number of days needed to complete the film.
“The number of days of shoot was too much. I tried to bring it down to a normal number of days, but it is not possible with that movie. It requires several days of shoot, including action sequences, and Mohanlal sir has a busy schedule. This is my understanding of the situation.”

The director’s remarks indicate that attempts were made to bring the production within a more manageable schedule, but the demands of the screenplay made that difficult. With Mohanlal juggling multiple commitments, finding the necessary window for an extended shoot proved challenging.
For a project built around a screenplay written specifically for the actor, replacing him would also have meant reworking the film’s creative foundation. Jithu’s decision not to adapt the script for another star suggests that the story and its intended leading man were closely linked from the outset.
Although neither the complete plot nor the scale of the proposed film has been officially detailed, the reference to extensive action sequences adds to the intrigue surrounding what could have been an interesting addition to Mohanlal’s filmography.
Mohanlal’s Upcoming Collaborations Offer a Clue
Speculation about the film’s future had already gathered momentum after Mohanlal shared a list of filmmakers he was looking forward to working with. The names included Vishnu Mohan, Anoop Sathyan, Priyadarshan, Dileesh Pothan, Sathyan Anthikad, Jude Anthany Joseph and Jeethu Joseph. Jithu Madhavan’s name was notably absent from the announcement.
Sharing the list, Mohanlal said, “Exciting stories, exciting journeys and some very special filmmakers.”
The projects mentioned are at different stages of development and production. Among them is his collaboration with Vishnu Mohan, titled Operation Ganga.
Jithu’s absence from the list had prompted questions about whether his film with Mohanlal had been quietly shelved. However, there was still room for speculation, as Anoop Menon, who also has a project lined up with the actor, was not mentioned either. Jithu’s latest comments have now provided a clearer answer, effectively ending hopes of the proposed collaboration taking shape in the near future.
Meanwhile, the director is preparing for his next release, Scene, which marks his first venture into Tamil cinema. Starring Suriya in the lead, the film is scheduled to hit theatres on November 6. After making a mark in Malayalam cinema with Romancham and Aavesham, Jithu’s Tamil debut will be another significant step in his career as he explores a new industry and audience.
