Why trading Grover Stewart could be a ‘little tougher’ for Colts

Among the Indianapolis Colts players who could be traded away is defensive tackle Grover Stewart.

Like Quenton Nelson and DeForest Buckner, who have already been traded, Stewart is a veteran player who could help out a playoff-contending team. He is also set to be a free agent this upcoming offseason.

However, as ESPN’s Dan Graziano noted, there could be a hurdle for the Colts and an acquiring team to clear if Stewart is going to be dealt.

“Stewart might be a little tougher to deal, since his base salary this year is $11.74 million, so an acquiring team would need to be able to fit about half that under its salary cap,” Graziano wrote.

That said, the $11.74 million base salary would be prorated for the acquiring team, based on how much of the season is left when/if Stewart were to be traded. So the new team doesn’t have to have the salary cap space to take on that entire amount.

Also, working in the Colts’ favor is that just about every team could use additional defensive tackle help.

Ultimately, Graziano still thinks the Colts find a trade partner for Stewart.

“There are enough teams looking for interior linemen that he likely finds a new home at some point in the next week,” Graziano added.

A fourth-round pick in 2017, Stewart has spent his entire career in Indianapolis.
