Chennai: The bizarre idea of fielding Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) leader Seeman as the common opposition candidate for the Ambasamudram Assembly by-election with the sole purpose of handing out an electoral debacle to the ruling TVK, which has not tasted any defeat after coming to power in May, is unlikely to become a reality and the main opposition parties, the DMK and AIADMK, have rejected the suggestion.
DMK spokesman, T K S Elangovan, told some media persons at Anna Arivalayam on Thursday that there was scope for the party to support Seeman in an election as he had been highly critical of the DMK and its leaders through his political career, while the AIADMK, after a meeting of office-bearers, had ruled such a possibility.
AIADMK leaders had pointed out that Ambasamudram was primarily their bastion that had returned party candidates as MLAs without a break since 2011.
Even though Essaki Subiah, who won the polls in May, resigned his seat in a bid to join the ruling party had caused the present by-election, the AIADMK’s popularity had not waned, they reasoned out.
So to field a common candidate would amount wasting a seat that was more likely to fall into the AIADMK basket after the polls, the party leaders feel, while the DMK honchos has a hope of winning it in the intense battle between the AIADMK and TVK.
Though parties like the DMK and AIADMK did not react adversely when the common candidate idea was mooted first, now they seem to have made up their minds on not supporting Seeman who may be contesting from Ambasamudram because his party functionaries feel that he has an edge over others.
But the shared political animosity of DMK and AIADMK cadre and functionaries towards Seeman would not allow them to back him though NTK supporters and many others who are opposed to the TVK would like the opposition parties to gang up and hand out a defeat to the TVK.
The TVK, however, awaiting the announcement of by-elections to Perundurai, Karur, Viralimalai, Tiruchirappalli East and Ambasamudram soon, has even started its campaign.
Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay’s recent official tours to Pudukottai and Erode and one scheduled for November 14 to Tirunelveli are only aimed at reaching out to the people of Viralimalai, Perundurai and Ambasamudram constituencies.
Perhaps the party is confident of winning back Tiruchirappalli East, which was vacated by Chief Minister C Josephy Vijay who retained Perambur in Chennai, that it has not begun any visible political activity.
