Residents of Abbugundu village in Irala mandal, under Puthalapattu constituency, ended their boycott of the ZPTC and MPTC elections and resumed voting after 2 pm on Thursday following assurances on basic infrastructure development.
The villagers had initially stayed away from polling to protest the lack of basic facilities, including proper roads, drainage and drinking water. They said the problems had remained unresolved for decades despite repeated appeals to elected representatives and officials.
The situation changed after trainee deputy collector Suresh visited the village on behalf of the District Collector and held discussions with residents. He assured them that a connecting road would be laid within two months.
Mandal TD president Hari Babu Naidu also visited the village and assured residents that a water tank and a temple would be provided. Following the assurances, the villagers called off their boycott and began arriving at the polling station after 2 pm to cast their votes.
Meanwhile, residents of neighbouring Thalupulapalle village in Puthalapattu mandal continued their boycott over similar grievances. Of the 915 registered voters at the village polling booth, only nine had cast their votes by the final hour of polling.
