The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) made significant gains in Odisha’s student union elections on Thursday, winning the presidents’ posts at two prominent colleges in Bhubaneswar — BJB Autonomous College and Rajdhani College — as results from campuses across the state came in.

At BJB Autonomous College, Aryan Mahapatra emerged victorious in the presidential contest, while Abinash Padhi won the corresponding post at Rajdhani College, marking a strong showing for the student organisation affiliated with the BJP in the state capital.

The ABVP also registered a sweeping victory at GM University in Sambalpur, winning all 13 posts. Swadhin Acharya was elected president, while Nikhil Agrawal won the secretary’s post. The ABVP panel also emerged victorious at Berhampur University in Ganjam district and DD University, Keonjhar.

The organisation’s candidates won at several other institutions, including Anthei Biju Patnaik College in Marshaghai in Kendrapara district, Angul Women’s College, Cuttack College, Kishorenagar Degree College and Dhamnagar College.

The Biju Chhatra Janata Dal (BCJD), the student wing of the Biju Janata Dal, also secured key victories at several institutions, underlining the competitive nature of the electoral contest.

BCJD candidates won the presidents’ posts at Ravenshaw University in Cuttack and Rama Devi Women’s University in Bhubaneswar. At Brundaban Subuddhi Degree College in Daspalla, BCJD candidates secured the posts of president, vice-president and general secretary. The organisation also won the president’s and general secretary’s posts at PKSS College in Jharsuguda.

BCJD candidates also registered victories at Kamala Nehru Women’s College, Basudevpur College, Jayapatna Indravati College and Khariar Model College.

The results of the student union elections at Utkal University, one of the state’s premier higher education institutions, had not been declared till this report was filed.

The elections assume significance as student union polls returned to Odisha’s college and university campuses after an eight-year gap. The contest has provided rival student organisations an opportunity to demonstrate their organisational strength and gauge their support among young voters.

The election process, however, was marred by disruptions, with polls cancelled at several colleges across Ganjam, Kendrapara, Nabarangpur, Jajpur, Bhadrak and Balasore districts.

Banki Autonomous College in Cuttack district and Khariar Autonomous College in Nuapada district cancelled their elections and declared sine die, according to reports.

The victories at BJB and Rajdhani colleges, along with the sweep at GM University, mark a significant showing for the ABVP. The BCJD’s victories at Ravenshaw and Rama Devi universities, meanwhile, underline its continued presence in key educational institutions across the state.
