Finnish hiking influencer Ali Leiniö, who had amassed over 86,000 YouTube subscribers with his wilderness survival and Lapland hiking content, has died aged 49 after suffering a medical emergency during a solo skiing expedition

A YouTube influencer has died after a sudden medical emergency. Ali Leiniö took ill during a solo expedition in a remote wilderness area. Leiniö, who amassed a loyal following through his captivating trekking and nature videos, was found dead after failing to return from a skiing trip.

The self-educated filmmaker had built up more than 86,000 YouTube subscribers, with his videos – featuring challenging treks and isolated adventures – regularly attracting hundreds of thousands of viewers.

Close associates confirmed his death, revealing he suffered a medical crisis while travelling alone. Leiniö had been skiing through a remote area when disaster struck, with his body later discovered in early April.

Reports circulating amongst the hiking community suggested he may have suffered a seizure. The YouTuber had become one of Finland’s leading outdoor personalities, remarkably only taking up hiking when he reached his 30s.

He later turned his passion into a professional career, creating travel films and immersive content that captured the brutal realities of life in the wild.

Despite producing content in Finnish, his videos reached audiences globally thanks to automated English subtitles. In 2022, his work earned him industry recognition at the Tubecon Awards, where he secured the travel influencer of the year title. Leiniö’s last video was uploaded just a fortnight before his tragic death.

Since then, tributes have flooded in from fans and outdoor enthusiasts, who remembered him as passionate, down-to-earth and deeply in tune with the natural world.

One friend recalled that meeting him felt like “reuniting with an old acquaintance”, praising his “outstanding” videos that motivated countless people to venture into the wilderness.

On X, formerly known as Twitter, one person said: “Light snow fell on Leinonen’s Alille. A nice guy who made wonderful video content about hiking, left there what I loved most but far too early.” “Good heavens! Woe is me. Now this is sad news. Poor Ali and his loved ones,” commented a second.

Meanwhile, a third went on to write: “Light tribes Ali. You are one of those YouTubers who got me interested in nature and hiking.” “Sad news about Ali Leiniö. Thoughts are with his family, friends, and followers,” tweeted a fourth.

A fifth devastated social media commented: “Tragic end for a guy who lived for the outdoors and inspired thousands with his treks. RIP. Nature doesn’t care how experienced you are.” As a sixth went on to say: “Very sad news. My thoughts are with his family, friends, and everyone who followed his work. May he rest in peace. If you want something a bit shorter: Heartbreaking news. Rest in peace.”

Leiniö had openly discussed his personal transformation, sharing how he’d left behind a difficult past to discover meaning through hiking and immersing himself in nature.

He frequently described trekking as both liberating and demanding – an opportunity to test his limits while celebrating the beauty of the outdoors. His death is believed to have taken place in Lapland’s Käsivarre Wilderness area.
