NAVARRE − Hiland head coach Matt Beechy summed up the end of Tuesday evenings Division V regional semifinal with this quote, “Honestly, sometimes I just hope athletes do athletic things.”

Beechy was referring to his sophomore forward Ally Mullet and her goal three minutes into overtime that helped Hiland (12-6-3) knock out Norwayne (13-5-3) 1-0 at Brideweser Stadium in Navarre for the second straight season in the postseason.

Early in the overtime period, Mullet was able to get past a defender or two on the right side, dribbled forward and took a hit and slid the ball at the near post past Norwayne goalkeeper Morgan Hamby for the match winner.

“It was incredible. I wasn’t imagining that it went in but it did,” said Mullet. “It just doesn’t feel real.”

“Ally broke down a defender and got it in,” Beechy said. “It was a tough angle it looked like.”

Before Mullet’s match winner, there really wasn’t any separation between Norwayne and Hiland throughout the match, as the two teams played to a 2-2 draw about two weeks ago at Norwayne in the regular season.

The Bobcats seemed like the more aggressive team in the first half, winning most of the ball on more occasions and launching their fair share of long shots outside the goal, which a couple looked like they would float over Hiland’s goalkeeper’s head. A scoreless draw at halftime, Hiland turned into the team that was winning more of those 50-50 balls in the second half and grew more into the match in possession.

“We were winning the 50-50 balls in the first half,” Norwayne head coach Matt Zimmerly said, who mentioned his team went with more of a 4-4-2 formation instead of the usual 4-3-3 they play. “Second half, they started being more aggressive and changed the match a little. We had to shift some players around in some areas where they were really attacking us.”

“They were playing a different formation and we switched how we were attacking,” Beechy explained. “I talked to the girls about calming down. Norwayne came out firing and took the game to us. We were able to string some passes together, which made it more of a 50-50 game, instead of a 70-30 game they were taking to us.”

What opened up the match more for the Hawks was the link-up play between Ally and forward Italee Mullet on the right side of the pitch in the Bobcats’ half of the field. The two were able to work in those wide areas and create some action going forward for a large part in the second half.

“We tried to keep our heads up more and see each other and play with each other, instead of taking it ourselves, so we can create more opportunities,” Ally said.

“That’s been a year long thing,” said Beechy. “They’ve been trying to get on the same page. During the tournament, Italee and Ally are starting to work really well together.”

In a match that almost certainly looked destined to head into a penalty shootout and a regional semifinal rematch of last year where Hiland defeated Norwayne 4-1, Ally’s match-winning goal at the difficult angle it was turned out to be the difference.

“It’s not just our game but we had to play harder then them,” she said. “We knocked them out last year, so we knew they wanted it.”

Said Beechy, “Ally has just been a beast all postseason and obviously she showed up there in the biggest of moments.”
