Andhra Pradesh has won six national-level Swachh Survekshan awards, with five municipal corporations and Kuppam Municipality recognised for their sanitation initiatives and efforts to improve urban cleanliness.
The awards have been announced for Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Guntur, Rajahmundry and Tirupati municipal corporations, along with Kuppam Municipality. President Droupadi Murmu will present the awards at a ceremony in New Delhi on November 11.
Municipal administration minister Dr P. Narayana and Swachh Andhra Corporation chairman Kommareddy Pattabhiram described the achievement as a matter of pride for the state and credited the municipal administrations and public participation for the recognition.
Dr Narayana said several initiatives had been taken under Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s leadership to improve sanitation in urban local bodies. The ‘Swarna Andhra-Swachh Andhra’ programme, implemented with public participation, was bringing changes in urban sanitation, he said.
As part of the programme, special sanitation activities are conducted across the state on the third Saturday of every month to make towns and cities garbage-free. The minister congratulated officials and employees of the award-winning municipal bodies and said the government was committed to making all municipalities in the state free of dumping yards.
Pattabhiram said the six awards reflected the statewide ‘Swarna Andhra-Swachh Andhra’ campaign under Naidu’s leadership, with the guidance of Deputy Chief Minister K. Pawan Kalyan and Dr Narayana. He said the campaign had improved sanitation and environmental protection through public participation and the efforts of municipal administrations.
He appreciated the contribution of sanitation workers and thanked officials at various levels and others associated with the campaign. He urged all stakeholders to strengthen the Swachh Andhra movement through greater public participation.
