VISAKHAPATNAM: A long-standing rivalry turned fatal when two men allegedly stabbed each other during a confrontation in Visakhapatnam, leaving one dead and the other seriously injured. Police have recovered one of the knives used in the attack and are searching for the second weapon.
The incident occurred at the CBM Compound Secretariat in Amar Nagar early on Thursday.
According to Three Town police, the deceased was identified as Kinjarapu Gangadhar (26) of Amar Nagar, while the injured, Kanta Siva Shankar (36) of Gnanapuram, is undergoing treatment. Both worked as drivers in the city.
Police said the two had been at loggerheads since January this year, when Gangadhar and another man, Chanti, allegedly assaulted Siva Shankar following a minor dispute. A case was registered and the accused were sent to jail before being released on bail. Police said the incident had fuelled continuing enmity between the two.
On Wednesday night, both men had gone to Amar Nagar after learning of the death of a common acquaintance and stayed there overnight.
Around 5.50 am on Thursday, Gangadhar entered the nearby Secretariat building and Siva Shankar followed about five minutes later. An argument reportedly broke out, during which both men stabbed each other.
Local residents who found the two injured alerted the police and shifted them to hospital. Gangadhar succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment, while Siva Shankar remains under medical care.
Initial investigations raised questions after the knives used in the attack were found missing. However, Three Town inspector L. Appala Naidu told Deccan Chronicle on Friday that police had recovered the knife allegedly used by Siva Shankar. Efforts are under way to trace the second knife, which police believe was used by Gangadhar. Police have registered a case and are continuing the investigation.
