KAKINADA: The Andhra Pradesh Transmission Corporation (APTRANSCO) has commissioned a 160 MVA power transformer at the 220 KV substation in Undi, strengthening the power supply network in West Godavari district.

The newly installed transformer, designated PTR-4, is expected to improve power availability and ensure a more reliable and uninterrupted electricity supply to consumers across the district.

Until now, the Undi substation operated with only three power transformers. Rising power demand from domestic, agricultural, industrial and aquaculture sectors, particularly during the summer months, had placed considerable stress on the existing infrastructure.

As a result, emergency load relief measures of 50 to 60 MW had to be implemented daily between 8 pm and 11 pm.

Officials said the state government responded swiftly by completing the installation of the transformer in a record 17 days. The additional capacity is expected to provide a long-term solution to overloading and low-voltage issues in the district.

The 160 MVA transformer can meet the power requirements of nearly two lakh people, about 32,000 agricultural pump sets of 5 HP capacity and around 30,000 aquaculture power connections of similar capacity.

Apart from benefiting West Godavari district, the enhanced capacity at the Undi substation is expected to reduce network stress in neighbouring Razole and Mummidivaram areas, improving the overall stability and reliability of the regional power network.
