Vijayawada: The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has taken up restoration work at the ancient Chennakesava temple in Gundluru village of Kalikiri mandal in Annamayya district.

The temple was originally built by the Yadavaraya kings in the 12th century CE. The rulers are known to have made significant contributions to temple architecture, including restoration works at the central shrine of Lord Venkateswara in Tirumala and the construction of three Golla Mandapams in front of the temple.

As part of ongoing efforts to preserve heritage structures, the state government is undertaking restoration works through the ASI.

Earlier, the ASI used traditional materials such as lime, jaggery, natural Arabic tree gum, lady’s finger extract, jute and kadakai for restoration works at temples including Srikalahasti, Simhachalam, Srisailam, Padala Mandapam at Alipiri in Tirupati and sites in Krishnapatnam.
