Guwahati: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday termed performance of his party in Assam as a “historic mandate”, while asserting that the people have once again blessed the alliance to form the government for a third consecutive term under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

After the BJP’s landslide victory, Mr Sarma told reporters that the verdict reflects the electorate’s support for sustained efforts to safeguard Assam’s identity while accelerating development.

He said that the government’s continuous push in areas of governance, infrastructure and socio-economic upliftment has earned public trust across regions and communities.

“The people of Assam have given their blessings once again. This mandate is for development, good governance, and for securing the identity of the state,” he said, thanking voters on behalf of the party and its allies for their overwhelming support.

The chief minister also credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for bringing Assam and the Northeast into the national mainstream, stating that the Centre’s focused attention has opened new avenues of growth, investment and connectivity.

He said that the development narrative has resonated strongly with the youth, who aspire to better opportunities and a stable future.

Chief minister reiterated that the scale of the victory is in line with the party’s expectations, recalling that BJP leaders had earlier indicated a tally crossing the 100-mark.

He added that the BJP has secured a clear majority on its own this time, reflecting deeper acceptance among the electorate.

Taking a swipe at the opposition, he said voters have rejected divisive politics and endorsed a governance model based on performance and delivery.

He asserted that the result reflects the people’s desire for peace, stability and continuity in governance. Reiterating that the mandate comes with responsibility, Mr Sarma said that the government will work with renewed commitment to fulfil its promises and ensure inclusive development.

He asserted that the next term will focus on accelerating economic growth, strengthening infrastructure and improving social indicators across Assam.

Thanking the voters of Assam, the Chief Minister expressed gratitude for their support and blessings, stating that the results reflect the trust placed in his government. He noted that the NDA had earlier projected winning around 100 seats, and the outcome has largely aligned with that confidence.

Mr Sarma also targeted the opposition and a section of the media over the narrative around “Gen-Z” candidates. He said the label was selectively used only for opposition candidates, while young faces from his party, including Rupali Langthasa, were not highlighted in the same way.

He further dismissed attempts to divide Assamese society along identity lines, saying that the state’s social fabric includes people from various communities and backgrounds. According to him, politics in Assam cannot succeed based on caste, religion or surnames.

Referring to the opposition’s performance, he claimed that very few Hindu MLAs would be elected from their side. He also indicated that leaders from other parties could be welcomed into the BJP if they align with its vision, citing examples like Bhupen Bora and Pradyut Bordoloi, who joined the party and went on to win with public support.

On the formation of the new government, Mr Sarma said the date for the swearing-in ceremony has not yet been finalised. He explained that the chief minister will first resign, after which the BJP legislative party will elect its leader. The final announcement will be made by state BJP president Dilip Saikia.

Mr Sarma also said that the 2026 election victory of BJP in West Bengal is a “victory for India” that makes the Northeast safer.

He alleged that Mamata Banerjee did not provide land for fencing, creating insecurity along the India-Bangladesh border.Demographic Change. He stated that infiltration in West Bengal is impacting the state’s demography and has broader national implications.

Asserting that they would ensure the deportation of illegal immigrants Mr Sarma said that now the central government would ensure the strict sealing of the West Bengal border.
