
BALLARI: Two men were killed after a speeding tipper lorry struck them while they were walking along a road near Venkatagiri village in Sandur taluk on Thursday evening.
The victims, identified as Kumar (34) and Manjunath (38), were residents of Hampinakatte village in Hosapete taluk. Police said both died on the spot due to the impact of the collision.
According to the police, the accident occurred on the road near the agricultural field at Venkatagiri village. The driver of the ore laden tipper lorry allegedly drove the vehicle at a high speed and in a rash and negligent manner before hitting the two pedestrians from behind.
A case has been registered at the Sandur Police Station under Sections 281 and 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 187 of the Motor Vehicles Act. Investigation into the incident is in progress.
Police have taken the lorry driver into custody and initiated further legal proceedings.
Following the incident, Ballari Superintendent of Police Dr Suman D Pennekar directed owners of ore transportation lorries to ensure that both the vehicle and its driver possess all mandatory and valid documents while transporting ore.
She warned that if vehicles are operated without the required documentation, legal action will be initiated not only against the driver and the vehicle owner but also against mining companies that permit ore transportation without verifying the availability and validity of the required documents.
