Thiruvananthapuram: Former Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Wednesday accused the BJP-led central government of targeting opposition leaders through the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
Speaking to the media after an over eight-hour-long ED raid at multiple locations, including his rented home in Thiruvananthapuram and his house in Pinarayi, Kannur district, Vijayan took a swipe at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, saying some political leaders might be “feeling satisfied” with the agency’s actions.
Rahul Gandhi had often questioned why Vijayan’s house was not being raided and why he hadn’t been arrested. During the recent election campaign, Gandhi had sharply criticized Vijayan, alleging he had an “understanding” with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
On the raids, he said the ED officials arrived around 7 a.m. and carried out their duties as directed by their superiors. “They wanted to understand many things. What they have found is for them to reveal,” he said. Vijayan alleged that the BJP-led central government was systematically targeting opposition parties and leaders through central agencies. However, he said strong resistance to such actions was emerging across the country. He also accused the Congress of selectively opposing central agency actions. “The Congress seems to have adopted a position that raids are acceptable as long as they are conducted against leaders of other political parties and not against their own,” he said.
Asserting that such actions would not weaken the CPM, Vijayan said the party would continue its political fight without fear. Those who think they can silence us through such actions are living in a fool’s paradise. Referring to the large gathering of CPM workers outside his residence during the raids, Vijayan said the response of party cadres showed their determination to resist attacks on the party leadership. Their unwavering support is our strength, and we will continue to fight unitedly,” he said.
