NIZAMABAD: The BJP staged a protest against the Congress at Nikhil Sai Chowrasta in the city on Saturday, alleging that the party opposed the Women’s Bill.
Urban MLA Dhanpal Suryanarayana Gupta, who led the protest, accused the Congress of blocking the legislation despite supporting it earlier. An effigy was burnt during the demonstration.
Addressing party workers, Gupta said the Congress had exposed its stand on women’s empowerment by opposing the Bill. He alleged that parties such as the DMK and Samajwadi Party had also taken a similar position.
He criticised the Congress for, as he claimed, failing to implement the Bill over the years and backing out at a crucial stage. He further alleged that the opposition was acting against the Bill due to political considerations.
BJP leaders said the party would continue to support measures aimed at women’s empowerment and asserted that the public would respond to the issue.
State secretary Sravanthi Reddy, district general secretary Pothankar Lakshminarayana, corporators and other leaders participated in the protest.
