Hyderabad: The Telangana BJP unit launched a drive to promote Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Sapta Sutras”, seven austerity measures aimed at bolstering national economic self-reliance amid the West Asia crisis. He highlighted Prime Minister Modi’s own reduced convoy as a model of responsibility.

Taking part in a special event on Thursday, state BJP President N. Ramchander Rao released pamphlets supporting the campaign, mentioning that he has been choosing public transport to attend functions. He asked Hyderabad residents to use the Metro Rail, promote carpooling in the IT sector, and adopt electric vehicles (EVs) for fuel conservation.

Ramchander Rao urged citizens to adopt the guidelines, including reducing petrol/diesel use, avoiding gold purchases, prioritising work-from-home, opting for public transport, cutting cooking oil consumption, shifting to natural farming over chemical fertilisers, embracing swadeshi products, and skipping foreign tours.

“Public participation is vital for ‘Aatmairbhar Bharat’. Patriotism means living and serving the nation,” Rao asserted, dismissing critics and citing that austerity drives had been undertaken by Congress Prime Ministers like Dr Manmohan Singh and Indira Gandhi.

Economist Prof. Dr Krishna Reddy analysed the sutras using global economic data, stressing they formed a “national economic movement.” He explained how small daily changes — like buying local products, conserving energy, and work-from-home can stabilize forex reserves and counter inflation.
