Queen drummer Roger Taylor has spoken about how bandmate Sir Brian May was ‘furiously jealous’ when Taylor was gifted the original 20ft bronze Freddie Mercury statue for his garden
Queen drummer Roger Taylor has shared a story where bandmate Sir Brian May was reportedly left “furious” over a Freddie Mercury-themed gift. Roger, alongside Freddie Mercury, Sir Brian, and John Deacon, helped Queen become one of Britain’s most celebrated bands of all time during the 70s and 80s.
However, during the 1980s there was an incident between Roger and Sir Brian that led to major changes to their respective gardens, reports the Express.
The story of the came up in an interview Roger was conducting with radio presenter Chris Evans on Virgin Radio in which they were playing a game of True or False. During this game Roger would read out statements and Chris would have to guess if they were real or untrue.
During one particular round, Roger read aloud a statement that said: “I was arrested in 83 for trying to steal a 20ft bronze statue from outside a London theatre.” Chris, grinning, responded: “I’m going to say that’s true.”
Roger swiftly replied: “Well, no, it’s not actually. I wasn’t arrested. I didn’t steal it but they did give it to me.”
Roger then went on to elaborate on the remarkable circumstances surrounding how he came to receive such an enormous statue. He continued: “It was the massive 20ft statue of Freddie which they wanted to store in a warehouse when the show closed. I said, ‘No, I’ll have that in my garden. Why not? It’s going to be cheap’. It was on top of the Dominion canopy.”
However, this gift apparently left bandmate Sir Brian seething with envy, prompting him to take action himself, resulting in a legacy that endures to this day in both of their gardens.
Roger revealed: “And Brian was absolutely furiously jealous and eventually they made another one and he’s got it in his garden. Mine’s the original.”
Meanwhile, there have been deeper revelations about Roger and Brian ahead a major anniversary next month. November 24th will mark 35 years since Freddie Mercury passed away, days after he revealed his AIDS diagnosis.
In an interview with the Metro, Sir Brian said it was an anniversary he “avoids” along with Roger. He explained: “I don’t celebrate the anniversary of his death. It’s a day to avoid because it brings up pain.
“The day he died was one of the most terrible days of our lives. I acknowledge Freddie all the time and he’s in my life very strongly. I know Roger feels the same.
“There isn’t anything that we do where we don’t refer to him in some way; the times we had together, the values and adventures that we shared.”
Roger Taylor will be returning to the UK’s screens today (Saturday, October 31) at 9.30am when he appears on James Martin’s Saturday Morning on ITV.
