Former ESPN reporter and White House aide Britt McHenry is facing fresh scrutiny after a heated exchange at an NBA game went viral and reportedly cost her a role in the Trump administration. Following reports that she was forced to resign over the drink-throwing incident, a lip reader has now offered an interpretation of what McHenry allegedly said during the confrontation with spectators at the Washington Wizards versus Milwaukee Bucks game on October 21, 2026.
Lip reader claims Britt McHenry invoked her White House fame during NBA outburst
Just days after McHenry was reportedly promoted to a new role at the U.S. State Department, she got embroiled in a controversy following her NBA outburst. A report by OK! Magazine revealed lip reader Nicola Hickling’s analysis of the viral footage.
In the footage first shared by TMZ, the 40-year-old ex-ESPN star is seen arguing with people seated near her before throwing a drink towards the crowd at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. Hickling says McHenry appeared to be asking a person filming, “How dare you film me?” before allegedly adding:
“I work for him. I am famous, so f*** you, baby.”

The reported reference to her White House employment may have been directed at her role within the Trump administration, although the footage alone does not establish the full context of the exchange. Lip-reading interpretations are not definitive, and the quoted words have not been independently confirmed.
The Trump official was also reportedly heard saying, “They were bothering me,” before suggesting that she could speak with other people outside. She allegedly used expletive language in another remark after this.
In the video circulating online, McHenry is seen throwing a drink towards spectators before leaving her seating area as people in the stands started booing. Another piece of footage captures the former reporter speaking with arena security, repeatedly asking, “What did I do?” as a guard appeared to direct her toward an exit.
What led to Britt McHenry’s meltdown at the NBA game?
Sources cited by TMZ claimed that the argument began when fans made insulting comments about Milwaukee Bucks player Kyle Kuzma’s fiancee, model Winnie Harlow. McHenry allegedly lashed out after hearing the derogatory remarks and then became the target of allegedly misogynistic insults.
The sources further claimed that someone threw a drink at McHenry before she retaliated. In clips circulating online, the former White House aide’s meltdown is captured, but sources say it left out details of what happened beforehand.
Andrew Fenichel, who attended the game with McHenry, also defended her account of the incident. Describing the exchange as “one big misunderstanding,” he said the situation escalated after a disagreement with rowdy fans. Fenichel allegedly said:
“It was an unfortunate situation, and that’s why drinks were thrown.”
The former ESPN correspondent had recently joined the U.S. State Department as a press adviser in September 2026 and was reportedly set to take on an expanded role leading External Affairs and Press under economic affairs secretary Jacob Helberg. However, reports published on October 23, 2026, said Britt McHenry had been forced to step down from her position following the viral meltdown.

The incident has also revived McHenry’s 2015 controversy, in which a video captured her berating a towing employee. The viral video showed McHenry making demeaning comments about the female employee’s job and education, saying things like, “Do you feel good about your job? So, I could be a college dropout and do that same thing?”
McHenry further took a dig at the employee, saying that if she were missing some teeth, they would hire her too. Britt McHenry further bashed the employee’s appearance, telling her, “Lose some weight, baby girl.” ESPN suspended McHenry for one week, and she subsequently apologized, saying she had allowed her emotions to get the better of her.
Neither McHenry nor the State Department had issued an official public comment on the NBA incident in the reports provided. The circumstances surrounding her departure also remain under wraps.
