Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court has directed the West Bengal Police to ensure safe return of post-poll violence affected people, irrespective of their political colours, to their original addresses after Trinamul Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee appeared as a lawyer before a HC division bench of Chief Justice Sujoy Paul and Justice Partha Sarathi Sen for the first time on Thursday and fiercely argued against cops’ inaction.

The former chief minister however faced protests by a crowd including some lawyers who shouted ‘Chor, Chor’ slogan at her when she left the courtroom after the hearing into a public interest litigation filed by advocate Sirshanya Bandopadhyay of TMC. Later, the Bar Council of India sought to know from the Bar Council of West Bengal in a letter about Ms Banerjee’s enrollment and practice status within May 16 for donning the advocate’s robes during her HC appearance and arguments.

Ms Banerjee, who walked into the HC at around 11 am springing a surprise, told the division bench, “I’m appearing here for the first time to argue in a PIL. My name has been registered at the Bar Council since 1985. I have renewed it also. Please see the images. Even the children are not spared. The women and minorities are not spared. So many houses have been ransacked. So many people are suffering. Please tell the police to behave properly. They are not allowing FIRs to be lodged. My humble submission is: Please protect the people of Bengal. This is not a bulldozer state.”

Later the division bench, in its interim order, asked the state police to ensure the safe return of persons, who have allegedly been displaced from their shops, homes and properties, irrespective of political affiliation. It added, “The police shall also ensure that if any citizen irrespective of his/her party affiliation, is illegally thrown out of his shop/house/property etc. due to post-poll violence, he/she shall be given a safe return to his shop/house/property etc.”
