Model-turned-actress Cara Delevingne has opened up about the film she’s premiering in Cannes – admitting it was one of the most intense experiences she’s ever had watching her work back
Cara Delevingne, who as ever, is turning heads with some bold fashion choices in the French Riviera, is in Cannes for the premiere of her latest film Club Kids.
An American comedy-drama starring Delevingne and first-time writer-director Jordan Firstman, the indie film has already made waves at the festival, where it had its world premiere – and garnered an impressive 7-minute standing ovation.
Set against the changing landscape of New York’s underground queer nightlife, the story follows a drug-addled party promoter Peter, whose chaotic life shifts when he has to raise a 10-year-old son, Arlo, that he never knew existed.
Delevingne plays the part of Sophie, Peter’s business partner – and their professional relationship goes south, amidst the crazy party lifestyle. And the glamorous star – known for previous roles in Paper Towns, Suicide Squad, Valerian and the series Carnival Row, has revealed that watching back the film with her fellow cast and a live audience was incredibly emotional.
“I think I haven’t cried and laughed that much in a movie, it just to be able to feel that range of emotion through watching something with everyone next to you in the cast,” she said.
“Hearing Reggie [Absolom, the 14-year-old breakout star who plays Arlo] crying next to me, and his mum behind him… it’s just such an amazing thing, and it really is the true meaning of family,”
Reflecting on club culture in the film, which critics have praised for its unbiased views on the club culture of the time, she also revealed in conversation the Elvis Mitchell Suite that the clubs for the characters in the film initially felt like another family. Later, however, they went on to represent something undefined that they tried fruitlessly to cling to.
“It starts off as the home, and it becomes this like trying to hold on to this thing that isn’t actually really all tangible”, she reflected.
Never one to blend into the background, Delevingne had her viral moment on the Cannes red carpet while promoting the film. For the photocall, she debuted a dramatic, voluminous 80s rockstar-inspired hair transformation, and rocked a bold, sheer blue pinstripe suit, changing into a backless black Tom Ford gown for the main gala premiere.
It’s not the first time she’s had a “moment” at Cannes. Last year, Delevingne walked the festival’s red carpets debuting various looks, including one where she was almost unrecognisable, ditching her signature blonde locks and debuting a dark wet-look fringed hairstyle.
However, the look lasted less than 24 hours as she reverted back to her blonde locks the very next day.
