Hyderabad: Delhi-based inter-state burglar Manoj Singh, 28, allegedly broke into a house in Market police station limits to fund his lavish lifestyle, police said.
Police recovered 576 grams of gold and 900 grams of silver ornaments, worth about Rs 82 lakh, from him. Singh, a native of Delhi, is a habitual offender involved in 19 burglary cases, police said.
A source told Deccan Chronicle that Manoj was fond of travelling, especially to tourist destinations. Whenever he visited Goa, he allegedly hired a Rolls-Royce, frequented pubs and upscale restaurants, spent lavishly and offered tips of not less than Rs 2,000. He often ran up bills of Rs 10,000 or more using stolen money. Manoj allegedly travelled to Goa to meet his 22-year-old girlfriend, who was unaware of his criminal background. A source said he had even promised to buy her a scooty.
After his release from Tihar Jail in April, Singh allegedly travelled to Goa, Mumbai and Kerala, spending stolen money on travel, pubs, restaurants and luxury services. He later reached Hyderabad and, after running low on money, planned another burglary.
Police said he first identified a house in SR Nagar but dropped the plan due to public movement. He then targeted a house with a “To-Let” board in Market police station limits, which police said matched his usual modus operandi, and stole the ornaments.
After receiving a complaint, Market police formed four teams and examined footage from over 100 CCTV cameras. They traced him to a lodge in Nampally and later found that he had hired a cab to Goa for Rs 12,000.
Police arrested Singh in North Goa and recovered the stolen valuables intact.
