Cheers to Chandigarh: Celebrating the City Beautiful on its Special Day!

On October 7, 1953, Chandigarh was inaugurated by President Dr. Rajendra Prasad, marking the birth of a city envisioned as a modern capital for Punjab. The event took place at Rajendra Park, situated between the Secretariat and Punjab Engineering College. Despite its historical significance, there has been little recognition of Chandigarh’s anniversary over the years, leading to a gradual fading of memories associated with its founders and key figures.

The successful execution of Chandigarh’s planning and construction was driven by a strong vision and teamwork. Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s dream of a “City Beautiful” was brought to life through the dedicated efforts of architects, engineers, and laborers. Notably, the initial cleanup involved herds of donkeys, as modern machinery like dumpers and JCBs were not available.

Dr. Mohinder Singh Randhawa played a pivotal role in shaping Chandigarh’s landscape. As the chairman of the planning committee in 1955, he combined his expertise as a scientist and bureaucrat with his passion for art to enhance the city’s greenery. His tenure as Chief Commissioner from 1966 to 1968 was marked by his commitment to promoting the Punjabi language and culture. Dr. Randhawa’s initiatives led to the planting of diverse flowering and foliage trees throughout Chandigarh, contributing to its reputation as a “garden city.”

Reflecting on his connection to Chandigarh, cricket legend Kapil Dev remarked during a recent walkathon: “I was born, educated, played and groomed in Chandigarh… Believe it, in the entire world, the best city to live in is only one — and that is Chandigarh!” This sentiment underscores the city’s enduring charm and significance in the lives of its residents.
