Raipur: Defence minister Rajnath Singh has indicated that the Chhattisgarh government’s proposal to create ‘Bastar Regiment’ in the Indian Army is under examination.
In a communication dated July nine to Chhattisgarh deputy chief minister Vijay Sharma, who holds home portfolio, Mr. Singh acknowledged the receipt of a letter in this regard by the former and indicated that the matter is under examination.
“Your (Mr. Sharma’s) letter dated June 26, 2026 regarding the proposal to create a Bastar Regime in the Indian Army has been received. The matter is under the process of examination”, Mr. Singh, in his letter, written in Hindi, said.
Mr. Sharma, in his letter, has justified the proposal, citing the bravery and valiance of the local tribal youths in Bastar region in the counterinsurgency operations.
He said that the local tribal youths in the region have long served alongside the security forces to take on the Maoists by braving the most challenging environments and exhibited amazing courage and resilience.
The Bastar Fighters and District Reserve Guard (DRG), the specialized counterinsurgency forces of Chhattisgarh police comprising exclusively the tribal youths of Bastar range, have played a crucial role in combating the Maoist menace by countering the Leftwing Extremism in the hostile terrains and jungles of Bastar for the last one decade.
Mr. Sharma said that the Bastar Regiment, if created, could utilize the operational experience of these tribal soldiers in difficult geographical regions, and can contribute to both the national defence and internal security.
Such a move would not only generate employment for the tribal youths of Bastar region but also instill a sense of patriotism and pride in them for becoming a part of Indian defence forces, he said.
