Chad Lowe and his wife, Kim Painter, are going through one of the most difficult periods of their lives. For those unaware, the actor’s family confirmed on September 29, 2026, that the couple’s teenage daughter, Fiona Hepler Lowe, has passed away. Fiona, who was Chad and Kim’s second child, allegedly died by suicide at the age of 13. What makes the news even more tragic is that just two years before Fiona’s death, Chad had gushed about being a girl dad.
Chad Lowe called being a girl dad an ‘incredible privilege,’ even though it came with its struggles
Two years before Fiona Hepler Lowe’s death, Chad Lowe appeared on an episode of the Still Here Podcast in 2024. There, the actor opened up about what an incredible privilege it was for him to raise his daughters. Apart from Fiona, Chad shares daughters, Nixie Barbara, 10, and Marbel Painter, 17, with his wife, Kim Painter. According to Chad, becoming a girl dad had changed him forever. He explained:
“I’m a girl dad. It’s so interesting because [I’m] always wanting to have my own experiences and not live in the shadow or follow in the footsteps of somebody. I get the experience of being a girl dad. I feel like having daughters is such an incredible privilege.”
Chad Lowe acknowledged that being a girl dad also came with its own struggles. Despite that, having three daughters had taught him to look at the world from their perspective. It had led him to see how much injustice goes on in the world, something he did not realize before. He added:
“I know that there are struggles. And now it’s taken what I’ve known intellectually, and it’s put it in my heart because I now have three daughters. And so, I look at the world from really their perspective, and I see the world and a lot of the injustices in the world from their perspective.”
At another point in the interview, Chad Lowe, who is the younger brother of actor Rob Lowe, said that there are many changes happening in society for women. He said that it is not “all doom and gloom,” as sometime in the future they might also have the first female president. According to him, women have a lot to offer, and if they became in charge of nations, the world would be a lot more peaceful.

Chad Lowe and his family have not yet revealed the exact date when their daughter, Fiona, passed away at the age of 13. However, the fact that they mentioned suicide helplines in their statement confirmed that Fiona’s death also happened under similar circumstances. They shared in the statement how heartbroken they are at the loss of their beloved daughter.
Chad Lowe’s family also asked for privacy as they navigate this difficult time. They concluded the statement by urging all those who are experiencing a mental health crisis to seek help. The statement could be read as:
“We are deeply heartbroken by the loss of our beloved Fiona… She was adored by her sisters, and she was deeply loved by her parents. In fact, she was the light of our lives. Her passing is devastating for our entire family, and we ask for prayers and privacy at this time. If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health, please reach out to the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline by calling or texting 988.”
