Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso vowed to focus on Manchester United as soon as the Spaniard left Anfield after the Blues’ EFL Cup fourth round exit to Liverpool on Wednesday.

The visitors drew 1-1 after 90 minutes, only to lose in the third set of sudden death spot kicks as goalkeeper Mike Penders stood in for the injured Emiliano Martinez.

“He looked really solid, with good composure,” Alonso said of Penders. “That is what it takes in this job to overcome difficult situations and he did quite well.”

Penders was also in goal for Chelsea’s 2-0 defeat at home to Tottenham on Saturday, ending their two-match winning run following victories at Everton and against Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge.

The Cherries cruised to victory at United on Sunday, winning 3-0 in a game that ended with beleaguered Red Devils head coach appearing to wave goodbye to fans who then booed his players as they left the pitch.

United have persisted with Carrick but remain in a precarious position a point above the relegation zone and on an eight-match winless run in all competitions.

“I didn’t expect anything,” Carrick replied when he was asked whether he had anticipated still being in charge against Chelsea.

“I was dealing with the performance, the result, what it was. There’s no hiding from the fact that the dynamics and the atmosphere in the stadium were a little bit different to normal.

“Going through that and digesting that… it was purely [a case in my] mind of ‘what do we need to do to improve things?’”

Cole Palmer is available again after serving his one-match ban in the EFL Cup game at Liverpool.

Joao Pedro has been ruled out for a “few weeks” with a thigh injury, so Danny Welbeck or Morgan Rogers could lead the line.

Mike Penders will retain his place in goal with Emiliano Martinez still not fully fit after a jaw operation. Captain Reece James and Jamie Gittens are out and Maxence Lacroix suffered a hamstring issue at Anfield, while Pep Chavarria is hoping to recover from a knock.

Bruno Fernandes, Lisandro Martínez and Matheus Cunha are all expected to return to United’s starting side.

Kobbie Mainoo is a doubt, as is Marcus Rashford. Benjamin Sesko, Manuel Ugarte, Patrick Dorgu and Luke Shaw are all out.
