Chennai: Security has been fortified at Chennai airport and along the Prime Minister’s travel routes ahead of Narendra Modi’s day-long visit to the city on Sunday, October 11. The Prime Minister is scheduled to attend several official events during his five-hour visit. Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay is also expected to participate in the programmes attended by the Prime Minister.

A team of Special Protection Group (SPG) officials from Delhi, led by ADGP Amit Kumar, arrived in Chennai to oversee security arrangements. A special coordination meeting was held at the old airport on Thursday evening, attended by senior airport officials, Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel, police officers, intelligence officials and representatives of the State government’s protocol department.

Modi is scheduled to arrive at the old airport at 11.10 am on a special aircraft from Delhi. After a reception, he will travel by road to Porur to attend the inauguration of a metro rail project. He will then proceed to the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras in Guindy for official functions before travelling to the Chennai Trade Centre in Nandambakkam for another programme. He is expected to leave Chennai for Delhi at 4 pm.
The original plan to fly by helicopter from the airport to Porur has been dropped. All his movements in the city will now be by road, prompting additional security arrangements along the routes. The SPG has also sought enhanced security in view of the possibility of roadshows at certain locations.
Security at the old airport will remain under the control of the SPG team from Friday until Sunday night. Drone flights and the flying of inflatable balloons have been prohibited in the airport area during this period.
Employees of courier and cargo companies operating within the old airport premises have been instructed to wear their photo identity cards visibly while on duty. Temporary workers will not be permitted to work at these facilities or in airport runway maintenance areas during the three-day security period.
Surveillance has also been intensified in areas surrounding the airport. Hotels and lodges nearby will be checked.
The airport’s existing three-tier security arrangements will be further strengthened, officials said. The enhanced measures will remain in force until Sunday night.
