Hyderabad: Chennai’s Velammal Vidyalaya dominated the CBSE South Zone (SZ-1) Boys Chess Championship held at Pallavi Model School in Boduppal here on Thursday. They took top honours in all three age categories — Under-11, U-14 and U-19.
In the U-11 section, Velammal Vidyalaya (Mangadu, Chennai) emerged champions, followed by Velammal Academy (Nolambur, Chennai) and Velammal Vidyalaya (Paruthipattu, Avadi, Chennai).
Velammal Vidyalaya (Mangadu, Chennai) also won the U-14 category, ahead of Velammal Academy (Nolambur, Chennai) and Velammal Vidyalaya (Paruthipattu, Avadi, Chennai) who were second and third respectively.
In the U-19 category, Velammal Vidyalaya (Porur, Chennai) were crowned champions. Bala Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School (Adyar, Chennai) secured the second place while Kalvi International Public School (Rajagambeeram, Madurai) finished third.
The four-day championship was conducted over six rounds, witnessing enthusiastic participation from 213 schools from four different states. A total of 849 players competed across three age categories.
National Chess Chairman K. S. Prasad and Telangana Chess Association secretary A. J. Chandra, Pallavi Group of Schools Director Sushil Kumar, Pallavi Model School (Boduppal) Principal Tanuja and International Arbiter R. Chandramouli attended the valedictory function and gave away prizes to the winners.
