Christa Pike has been in the headlines after her failed execution attempt in Tennessee. Her execution was halted midway, and she was rushed to the hospital. She is on a ventilator with hospital staff doing their best to save her life. They are trying to clear the pentobarbital she was administered into her system. Amid it all, her family members are in focus.
All about Christa Pike’s sibling
As per court records and background reports, Christa has an unnamed half-sister from her mother, Carissa Hansen. However, no public information or record has been shared about her sibling’s current whereabouts. There is no public record of the sibling advocating for her during her legal battle.
For those who don’t know, Christa Pike was sentenced to death in 1996 in connection with the 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer. Christa was just 18 at that time, when she and her then-boyfriend, Tadaryl Shipp, brutally murdered Colleen. The shocking details of the murder left people in deep fear across the United States. Another most talked-about detail was that there was a pentagram carved into Colleen’s chest.
Christa’s lawyer stated that she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder after the killing of Colleen. In an earlier petition, Christa revealed that it took her years to even understand what she had done. It was hard for her to accept how many lives were affected by her act. She was apologetic about taking the life of someone’s child, sister, and friend. She said:
“It took me numerous years to even realize the gravity of what I’d done. Even more to accept how many lives I affected. I took the life of someone’s child, sister, friend. It sickens me now to think I had the ability to commit such a crime.”
Christa has been the first woman who was given the order to be executed in the state after more than 200 years. The Death Penalty Information Center stated that the last execution of a woman happened in 1820. For the unversed, Christa received two doses of the drug in a failed attempt to execute her on September 31, 2026.
It was later revealed by her lawyer in a court filing that there might be problems with intravenous lines, which caused the drug to flow into her body instead of her bloodstream. The execution team didn’t realize that the IV lines were not correctly placed before they administered another injection. They wrote:
“Apparently at no point did any member of the execution team realize that the IV lines were not correctly placed or that the veins had blown and that the pentobarbital was, in whole or in part, entering Ms Pike’s body.”
Talking about the mother of the woman who killed Christa Pike, she stated that she was left without justice after the failed attempt to carry out her execution. She criticized the state’s way of handling the procedure, which left the death row prisoner hospitalized in critical condition. Mary Martinez’s daughter, Colleen Slemmer, was killed in 1995, and she was awaiting justice for her daughter. She said:
“I didn’t get justice for my daughter; I watched the whole thing. She was awake,” she said. “She was moving her head, moving her feet. She was trying to sit up. Didn’t work the first time they gave her a shot. It didn’t work the second time, so she’s in the hospital and alive.”
Martinez described the failed execution as a mess, and stated that Christa never expressed remorse during the attempted execution. She also pointed out how the team didn’t say anything and then, all of a sudden, asked all the victims to leave, and left. They had no idea about what went wrong until the commissioner told them that the execution didn’t work.
