ClearVue Technologies has opened a new front in its Asian expansion strategy, establishing a permanent base in Hong Kong as it looks to convert a growing pipeline of solar-powered building projects into commercial deals.

The ASX-listed smart building materials specialist has set up a regional headquarters and working product showroom in the commercial district of Tsim Sha Tsui East, giving it a foothold in one of Asia’s premier financial and construction markets.

ClearVue’s technology allows building surfaces such as windows, facades, spandrels and balustrades to generate solar power.

The move comes as ClearVue confirms it is progressing 15 regional project opportunities, with design proposals already submitted for every one of them. Management is banking on its new boots-on-the-ground presence to help turn those proposals into signed contracts by putting its technology directly in front of developers, architects and building owners.

The Hong Kong office will also serve as a launchpad into the wider Greater Bay Area and southern China, where a growing focus on building decarbonisation is driving demand for energy-efficient construction materials.

The technology at the centre of the push is the company’s patented building-integrated photovoltaic, or “BIPV”, system, which allows traditionally passive building surfaces to generate electricity. Unlike conventional rooftop solar panels, ClearVue’s technology can be incorporated into windows, cladding and balustrades, effectively turning a building’s exterior into a power-generating asset.

Its transparent solar glass is of particular interest because it lets natural light pass through while harvesting solar energy, potentially helping buildings reduce their reliance on grid electricity without compromising their appearance.

The company has already taken a significant step towards demonstrating the technology in the region. In September, it deployed its single-glazed insulating photovoltaic window technology at a hotel in Macau in collaboration with its partner LandVac, providing a real-world test of its electricity generation and thermal performance.

The trial replaced a single legacy window in a Macau hotel guest room with ClearVue and LandVac’s single-glazed insulating photovoltaic window, dubbed “Project Delta”, alongside an adjacent control room and three BIPV power-generating façade cladding panels.

ClearVue says the new single-glazed window is designed to deliver thermal performance comparable to 1.5 metres of brick wall, while being about as thick as a mobile phone.

ClearVue’s new Hong Kong showroom will take that trial and sales pitch a step further, featuring working examples of its “Vision Glass”, “Cladding” and “Balustrade” products. Rather than relying on technical presentations, potential customers will be able to see the products operating first-hand and better understand how to incorporate them into new developments or building upgrades.

The regional operation will be driven by business development manager Edward Hui, supported by research and development specialists Stanley Chan and Jane Yu, with non-executive director Andrew Lau providing strategic oversight at board level.

ClearVue Technologies chief executive officer and managing director Doug Hunt said: “Hong Kong is an important market for ClearVue, both commercially and strategically. Our Macau deployment, growing regional project pipeline and relationships with industry partners have reinforced the value of establishing a permanent presence in the region.”

The office will be formally opened tomorrow, Wednesday, November 4, with an industry and stakeholder reception scheduled for Friday. Representatives from InvestHK, LandVac and other regional industry partners are expected to attend, providing an early opportunity for ClearVue to strengthen its commercial connections.

ClearVue’s timing for the new business front looks perfect. Hong Kong’s focus on sustainable construction provides a receptive market for technology capable of generating power from surfaces that would otherwise be passive.

The company’s immediate challenge will be converting its 15 project opportunities into binding commercial contracts. However, with its Macau installation providing a practical demonstration and its new Hong Kong showroom putting the technology on full display, ClearVue may have just put itself in the box seat to pursue serious commercial growth in one of Asia’s key construction markets.
