Verity is about to give audiences one seriously unsettling weekend at the movies soon. The film, based on Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel of the same name, releases in Indian cinemas on October 2, bringing Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson together for a psychological thriller that doesn’t let up.
Ahead of release, Hoover opened up about one casting choice she’s clearly thrilled about. Dakota Johnson playing Lowen wasn’t just a good fit. According to the author, it was practically destiny.
“I’m such a big fan of hers. I am friends with E.L. James, and so when they put her in that role for Fifty Shades of Grey, I feel like I got to follow along with her rise and her career as a fan first,” Hoover said. “And then when they cast her in this, she’s the perfect Lowen for me. She embodies everything that I was hoping an actress could bring to that role, and she’s just so effortlessly gorgeous on screen and in person and so kind.”
High praise, and honestly, the story needs an actress who can hold that kind of weight. Verity follows bestselling author Verity Crawford, played by Hathaway, and Lowen Ashleigh, a struggling writer brought in to ghostwrite for her after a personal tragedy leaves Verity unable to finish her own series. Lowen moves into the remote Crawford estate, only to stumble upon what seems to be Verity’s deeply disturbing autobiographical notes. What follows is a slow unravelling of fiction, obsession and manipulation, with Josh Hartnett playing Verity’s husband Jeremy caught right in the middle of it all.
Directed by Michael Showalter and produced by Amazon MGM Studios, with Sony Pictures Releasing International handling distribution, Verity arrives in Indian theatres on October 2, cinemas only.
