Bhubaneswar: A wave of congratulatory messages poured in for Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday appointed him, along with Union home minister Amit Shah, as an observer for the election of the BJP Legislature Party leader in West Bengal.
Senior BJP leader and state civil supplies minister Krushna Chandra Patra termed the development a matter of pride. “I congratulate Odisha CM Mohan Charan Majhi on being appointed along with Amit Shah ji as observer for the election of the BJP Legislature Party leader. It is a proud moment for all of us,” he said.
Echoing similar sentiments, senior BJP leader Jitendra Biswal described the appointment as a significant recognition for Odisha. “It is indeed a glorious moment for the people of Odisha that our Chief Minister has been appointed as an observer. Along with state BJP president Manmohan Samal, he had actively campaigned in West Bengal. Samal was among the first to predict that the BJP would cross 200 seats,” Biswal noted.
Several other party leaders and office-bearers also extended their congratulations through social media platforms such as Facebook and X.
Majhi had visited West Bengal twice during the election campaign, addressing multiple roadshows and public meetings. He urged voters to support the BJP, highlighting Odisha’s development trajectory as a model.
According to an official press release issued by BJP national general secretary Arun Singh, the party’s Parliamentary Board has designated Amit Shah as the central observer for the exercise, while Mohan Charan Majhi has been appointed as co-observer.
The appointment assumes significance as the observers will oversee the process of electing the BJP Legislature Party leader in West Bengal—a key step towards finalising the party’s chief ministerial face in the state.
Political observers are closely tracking the development, with Shah’s direct involvement underlining the importance the BJP leadership attaches to West Bengal. The inclusion of Majhi, a relatively new Chief Minister, is being seen as a strategic move by the party’s central leadership.
The legislature party meeting is expected to be held soon, after which clarity will emerge on the BJP’s choice for the chief minister’s post.
Notably, the BJP has secured a decisive mandate in West Bengal and is set to form its government in the state for the first time. The party has won 206 seats, crossing the two-thirds majority mark in the Assembly, effectively ending the Trinamool Congress’s 15-year rule. The TMC trailed significantly, securing 80 seats and leading in one. Results have been declared for 292 of the 293 Assembly constituencies.
