Murshidabad: A 48-year-old Congress worker, Ziarul, alias Pintu Islam, was brutally murdered by a group of armed men while he was returning home in Murshidabad district.
According to police sources, the incident took place on the Debaipur-Sishapara village road under the Islampur police station limits.
A group of armed miscreants forcibly intercepted Pintu and attacked him with iron rods, sharp-edged weapons and bamboo sticks. They then left him in a roadside wooded area, assuming that he had died.
Locals and police later found Pintu and rushed him to Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital for treatment. However, he succumbed to his injuries on Saturday night.
Islampur Congress MLA Zulfiqar Ali alleged that armed men linked to NCPI were behind the attack. He claimed that Pintu had actively worked during the last Assembly election in support of his campaign.
However, NCPI Murshidabad MP Abu Taher Khan denied the allegation and said the Congress was attempting to malign him and his party. He claimed that the murder was the result of a village dispute.
Pintu’s aunt and former Raninagar-I Panchayat Samiti chairperson Chayan Bibi alleged that a dispute had broken out between Pintu and another group of villagers after the Assembly election and claimed that the murder was an act of revenge. She also alleged that a civic volunteer was involved in the incident.
The civic volunteer denied the allegation, claiming that he was on duty at the Islampur police station at the time of the incident.
Police have arrested one person in connection with the murder so far. Further investigation is underway to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the killing and identify the other accused.
