The Chicago Cubs are just one win away from sealing their spot in the 2026 MLB postseason after earning a 9-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on the road. No one can say that the Cubs didn’t earn this; the battle scars Alex Bregman bore after the Cubs’ win on Sunday shows that they poured out their blood and sweat to get to this point.

With two outs in the top of the fourth inning, Bregman was minding his business in the on-deck circle with two outs for the Cubs in the frame. On a 1-2 pitch, however, Michael Busch‘s check swing went foul and went straight towards Bregman’s face.
This unfortunate event immediately caused Bregman to clutch onto his face, and he exited the game after taking that blow to the eye area. After the game, Bregman posted a picture of himself on his official Instagram account showing the aftermath of that horrible blow he took.

Busch did manage to reach base on that at-bat after some friendly fire for the Cubs, so Chicago had to sub Bregman out of the game immediately — with Matt Shaw taking his place. Shaw did not get a hit in his two at-bats on the night, but he did draw a walk in his first plate appearance as a pinch-hitter to replace Bregman.

Bregman already made his mark for the Cubs on the night. He opened the scoring for Chicago with an RBI single to drive in Pete Crow-Armstrong. The Cubs had already scored five runs by the third inning, and they kept Cincinnati at bay all night before taking what was a very comfortable win in the end.

The Cubs will now get a rest day on Monday before they face the Miami Marlins back at home for their first shot at clinching a postseason spot. It’s not quite clear if Bregman will be healthy enough to play by then, but his recovery will be the team’s priority, so a rest day or two may be in order.
