Kolkata: A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi bought and tasted jhal muri, a popular Bengali street food, at a shop following his Assembly election campaign at Jhargram in West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accused him of staging a “drama.”
“It’s all drama. How come a camera was present when the PM suddenly made an unscheduled stop during the campaign? The entire episode was scripted. He was seen carrying a Rs 10 note in his pocket. Is it believable,” the Trinamul Congress supremo asked at Muraroi in Birbhum on Monday.
She claimed, “The SPG prepared the jhal muri for him. A microphone was installed in the shop. It was completely a staged event. He goes to meditate in caves during polls. He paid Rs 10 for jhal muri which was already prepared. Had it been a spontaneous act, then how were cameras fitted inside the shop?”
The CM then pointed to independent candidates contesting the polls to split votes. “I have heard that some are fighting as independents after betraying their party and taking money from the BJP. They have tried to commodify their religion and caste. In my area, the traitors from Malda and Murshidabad have fielded their candidates. Never forgive those who betray their community,” she said.
Banerjee, who also campaigned at Khardaha in North 24 Parganas and Beliaghata and Manicktala in Kolkata, argued, “Those who are still aligning themselves with the BJP must realise that they will not be able to defeat us anywhere.”
She also suspected BJP of planning to arrest many TMC leaders before the polls. “We have got the list. We will move the court. We will fight with all our might. I have got the Election Commission list through a media house. They have targeted TMC only. Is everyone in the BJP a saint? There’s a candidate of the BJP who has acquired a lot of money through illegal activities related to coal. I know who he is. I am not naming him out of courtesy. He has made a huge wealth in a few years. I know who sends him the money.”
