As the cough and cold season arrives, research suggests it could help prevent a cold from developing or at least shorten it significantly
The season for coughs and colds has begun, with the sounds of sneezing, sniffling and nose blowing becoming more prevalent. Research by Puressentiel reveals that over a third of Britons have dealt with a cough in the last month, while a similar proportion have battled a cold.
Yet there may be a simple approach to help prevent a cold, or at least address it early on, to stop it from taking full hold.
Chemist and Natural Health Expert Dr Tim Bond said: “Echinacea purpurea, also known as purple coneflower might offer some protection from the common cold. The European Medicines Agency has even confirmed that it can prevent and improve the symptoms of cold more rapidly than placebo when taken early.
“Early action matters. It’s when you experience the first signs of a cold that you should think about how you can support your symptoms and keep yourself as comfortable as possible.”
Echinacea explained
Dr Bond said: “Echinacea isn’t a guaranteed cold-stopper, but the science says it sure could help. It could also help to reduce the length of a cold. A meta-analysis of 14 studies found that echinacea reduced the odds of developing a cold by 58% plus and for study participants who did develop a cold, it reduced its duration by 1.4 days . Also, a Cochrane review also concluded that echinacea had preventive effects, although more research is needed.”
Other natural remedies to help stop a cold
Dr Bond explained: “Propolis, a compound produced by bees, is another promising plant-based ingredient. In a randomised controlled trial of 122 adults with mild upper respiratory infections, those using a standardised propolis oral spray recovered from their symptoms around two days earlier than those given a placebo. Clinical research has explored the role of echinacea and propolis in respiratory health. When the first signs of a cold include nasal congestion, saline can also help loosen mucus and ease discomfort.”
Importance of hydration and nutrition
Dr Bond continued: “Propolis and echinacea are both found in Puressentiel’s Respiratory Decongestant Nasal Spray, alongside essential oils and saline. If a blocked nose is one of your first symptoms, the 100% natural formula can help to soften nasal mucosa, soothe irritation and relieve nasal congestion.
“As well as natural solutions, hydration – in the form of water, herbal teas, juicy fruits and vegetables, alongside a balanced diet and plenty of rest and good sleep can help to support your body and immune system to ward off colds and coughs.
“It’s worth thinking about your home environment too, particularly during cough and cold season. Plant oils work best in combination and Puressentiel’s Purifying Air Spray combines 41 essential oils, including eucalyptus, geranium, lemon and lavender.
“A total of 18 studies have shown the spray to be clinically effective against viruses, fungi, bacteria and mould, with research also showing improvements in lung function. It can be used throughout the home, including in the bedroom at bedtime.
“The power of plants is evident with the science showing just how helpful these plants can be. When taken at the right time, at the first sign of a sniffle, you could not only prevent a cold from developing but also shorten it significantly.”
