TIRUPATI: The Indian Society of Critical Care Medicine (ISCCM), Tirupati Branch, organised a Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme on Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) at BIRRD Trust Hospital in Tirupati, providing hands-on training to doctors in bedside ultrasound techniques.
The programme was attended by anaesthesiologists, critical care specialists, emergency physicians, postgraduate students and clinicians from medical colleges, teaching hospitals, corporate hospitals and government healthcare institutions across the state.
Inaugurating the programme, Dr Gudaru Jagadish, Director of the Balaji Institute of Surgery, Research and Rehabilitation for the Disabled (BIRRD) Trust Hospital, said POCUS enables doctors to make faster clinical decisions by providing real-time imaging at the patient’s bedside, reducing delays in diagnosis and improving emergency care.
Faculty members conducted supervised practical sessions at five training stations. Participants received training in lung ultrasound to detect conditions such as pneumothorax, pleural effusion and pulmonary oedema, cardiac ultrasound for assessing heart function and causes of shock, vascular ultrasound for guided line placement and detection of deep vein thrombosis, Extended Focused Assessment with Sonography in Trauma (E-FAST) for identifying internal bleeding, and airway ultrasound for confirming endotracheal tube placement.
Dr Jagadish said POCUS is increasingly being adopted in emergency medicine, anaesthesiology, critical care, cardiology, pulmonology, general medicine and surgery because it enables rapid bedside assessment without delaying treatment.
The programme was organised under the leadership of ISCCM Tirupati branch president Dr Harikrishna, Secretary Dr Rana Pratap, Treasurer Dr Shankar and programme director Dr Subhashree.
