The EastEnders icon has played Ian Beale on the BBC soap for 41 years, so let’s take a look inside Adam Woodyatt’s family life.
EastEnders legend Adam Woodyatt isn’t the only member of his family to appear on the BBC One soap.
The 58-year-old is one of the show’s longest cast members, having played Walford’s Ian Beale since the show launched in February 1985, when Adam was only 16 years old.
The character holds the record for the most married man in the Square with six marriages to five different women under his belt, though he currently remains a single man, well, kind of.
In a romantic twist, Ian is currently enjoying the company of Elaine Peacock (played by Harriet Thorpe) after the pair bonded while putting up a fierce battle to become a local councilor.
Elaine is the ex-wife of George Knight (Colin Salmon), who was also married to Cindy Beale (Michelle Collins), Ian’s original wife, and appears to be interested in a future with Ian, though his future is in jeopardy.
Ian’s family has been left devastated as he faces a prison sentence for accidentally knocking over Jordan Fox (Jahsaiah Williams) with his car and leaving him for dead.
Will Chelsea Fox (Zaraah Abrahams) save Ian from a long prison sentence?
As Ian Beale takes center stage in EastEnders once more, let’s take a look at Adam Woodyatt’s life beyond the soap.
Who was Adam Woodyatt married to?
Adam, from Walthamstow in East London, was married to Beverley Sharp for 22 years before they announced their shock split in August 2020.
The couple married at Disney World in Florida in 1998 and have two grown children, Jessica and Samuel.
“Beverley and Adam separated in August 2019, and we ask that the family’s privacy is respected,” a BBC spokesperson said at the time.
Their marriage broke down a year before they announced their separation, keeping it under wraps even after Adam had left the family home. Both parties have confirmed there was no third-party involvement in their split.
In 2022, the pair reportedly reached an agreement on their divorce settlement and were served with a decree absolute. Adam is yet to go public with another relationship.
Following Adam’s split from his wife, he left their home and moved into a very plush £93,000 motorhome.
Initially purchased for a theatrical tour around the UK, while on a break from EastEnders, Adam decided the motorhome would be his new abode after the split.
During an interview with Dublin FM’s Big Breakfast in 2022, when quizzed about his unusual living choice, Adam revealed: “I’ve not just purchased it, I live in it.”
Cheekily responding to radio host Rebecca Shekleton’s inquiry on how he finds motorhome life, he said: “It’s usually where I left it parked.”
Embracing the motorhome lifestyle, Adam said: “I love it, it wouldn’t suit everyone, but where I am in my life at the moment, it’s perfect for me. I’ve got all my stuff for cooking, I’ve got my house on wheels.”
Who did Adam’s son play in EastEnders?
In 2020, Adam was joined by his real-life son, Samuel, on the BBC soap. Playing a police officer, Samuel arrested his dad’s character, Ian, and led him to a police car parked outside The Queen Vic.
Due to filming restrictions put in place during the COVID pandemic, the trick allowed Ian to have a physical-contact scene without requiring actors to socially distance.
In 2016, Sam suffered a serious injury after an accident that saw him hit by a car. Just months later, he defied the odds and made a recovery in order to run the London marathon alongside Adam.
Together, they raised £6,500 for the London Air Ambulance service in thanks for their help.
In 2025, Samuel returned to acting, taking on the role of James in the movie Sriracha.
EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday on BBC One and iPlayer
