The hitmaker is taking a break from touring the world and is now set to release a new track that’s over a decade in the making.
Ed Sheeran is gearing up to release a long-awaited collaboration with DJ Martin Garrix, more than a decade after the pair first worked on the track.
The singer-songwriter, who is currently on a short break from his Loop World Tour, has reunited with the Dutch dance music star for the single Repeat It, which is expected to be released next month.
Ed and Martin originally teamed up in 2014, with the Shape of You star hinting at the time that he was experimenting with electronic music. The track was later debuted by Garrix during his set at Miami’s Ultra Music Festival in 2015, but was never officially released.
Now, insiders say the song has been reworked and is finally ready to be shared with fans.
A source told The Sun, “Repeat It has taken 12 years to officially see the light of day but finally Ed and Martin’s collaboration is coming out.
“The song has been reworked slightly from the version played at Ultra back in 2015 to make it more radio-friendly. Initially, it was called Rewind, Repeat It. But now the song is simply titled Repeat It.
“Lyrically, it’s a classic Ed love song set to a dance beat.”
Ed previously teased the collaboration when it was first recorded, telling fans on Instagram: “Finished up my very first EDM song with Martin Garrix, brilliant experience, looking forward to you all hearing it.”
The track is said to stay true to Ed’s signature style, blending romantic lyrics with an upbeat dance production. In the song, he sings: “Stay for a night, call it what you want.
“And I’ll compromise. To have you in my arms.”
He continues: “Don’t fight the feeling. Rewind, repeat it. If the world ends tonight. You’ll be in my arms. We will be frozen in time, underneath the stars.”
The release comes during a break from his world tour, titled Loop. The dad-of-two, who is married to professional hockey player Cherry Seaborn, has been touring extensively, with his previous Mathematics tour only wrapping up in December last year.
The star’s musical style isn’t the only thing that has been revamped in recent months. The star previously revealed that he had undergone a drastic lifestyle change by moving away from the booze, cigarettes and unhealthy food, and exercise and clean eating. Ultimately losing 14kg and getting into great shape.
He told Men’s Health at the time, “I became a dad, I remember Lyra was two weeks old and I had my best mate round and we had a bottle of wine. I went to bed, then Lyra woke up 20 minutes after I’d fallen asleep. I woke up and I was like, ‘F**k, I probably shouldn’t drink if I’m going to feel this dreadful.”
He added: “And I do think that wellness is a direct mirror to mental health and the way you feel. I always felt like s**t within myself; I’d wake up and look in the mirror and just feel gross.”
