A manhunt is under way for the shooter and accomplices behind a drive-by shooting in Logan on Saturday night that injured four people, including a teenage bystander who was shot in the head.
More than 50 police crews responded to reports of gunshots fired from a vehicle outside the Fitzy’s Loganholme centre on Bryants Road, where a boxing event was being held, about 8.15pm on Saturday.
A 19-year-old Jimboomba woman was shot in the head and neck and rushed to Brisbane’s Princess Alexandra Hospital in a critical condition.
She remained in a critical condition on Monday.
Three other people – a 38-year-old Browns Plains man, a 37-year-old Salisbury man and a 27-year-old Cornubia man – were shot in the abdomen and received surgery.
All were in a stable condition on Sunday.
In an update on Monday, Logan district officer Chief Superintendent Mel Adams said the woman’s family were distraught and were at her bedside at the hospital.
She did not say whether the other three injured men were previously known to police or to each other, and said they were being treated as victims.
“Police have been engaging with the victims and speaking with them at various intervals since Saturday night,” Adams said.
“As far as I know, [they] are all co-operating.”
Adams appealed for anyone with information about the shooting to come forward, as police scrambled to piece together the incident and locate persons of interest.
“We will solve this crime but to do that, we need community input and community support,” Adams said.
“More information is rolling in … but I can tell you there will be people out there who know who did this, or suspect who did this.
“We need to hear from you.”
Anyone with information, CCTV or dashcam footage could reach police or Crime Stoppers anonymously, she said.
Detective Inspector Ian Galpin said he was appalled the young woman’s life now hung in the balance, telling reporters on Sunday she was not believed to be the group’s intended target.
“I believe she is an innocent bystander,” Galpin said.
“It’s horrific. It’s something that her family should never have to go through.”
Galpin said event organisers told police there was nothing to suggest something might occur before “at least half-a-dozen shots” were fired at people standing near a drop-off zone outside the venue from the front passenger window of a Mitsubishi.
Witnesses and CCTV saw two men wearing balaclavas and gloves in the vehicle.
The car was found set alight on Maloney Road at Waterford West. A second vehicle collected the pair and Galpin said they had reason to believe one of them might have been burnt.
Adams said the Mitsubishi – a silver ASX – was being driven without number plates and police think it had been “mobile for some time”.
A dual-cab ute was also set alight on Beaudesert Road at Tamborine. Investigations were under way to see if that second vehicle was involved in the incident.
Taskforce Maxima, the Queensland police bikie squad, the state’s Crime Command unit, and a range of specialist detectives are involved in the investigation.
Logan Mayor Jon Raven said he was not aware of any significant bikie activity in his city.
“Police said there is no further threat and we have to trust our men and women in blue and their assessment,” Raven said.
“These individuals do not represent the people of Logan, and they do not represent what we’re about.”
In a statement on Sunday, organisers for the boxing event – Logan City Titles – said they were “heartbroken” and were praying for the full recovery of all victims.
Premier David Crisafulli said he hoped the offenders would be brought to justice swiftly and he pledged to exercise strong new laws to prosecute the shooters.
“Earlier this year, we passed amongst the strongest new laws for drive-by shooting in the country, and it’s my hope that these people responsible for it are arrested and that those new laws apply to them,” he said.
A hub run by Lifeline and Victims of Crime Community Response Program has been set up at the Logan Hyperdome, and will offer support to victims and witnesses until 5pm on Tuesday.
