VISAKHAPATNAM: Sections of the fishing community have opposed the proposed National Fisheries, Aqua and Marine Summit in Visakhapatnam, alleging that several long-pending issues affecting the sector remain unresolved.

Representatives of traditional fishermen, mechanised boat owners and other associations met at the Gangamma Temple in the Visakhapatnam Fishing Harbour on Wednesday and voiced concerns over the condition of the fisheries sector.

Mechanised Fishing Boat Owners Association president Janakiram Vasupalli said fishermen and aqua farmers were struggling with rising input and operational costs, including seeds, feed, diesel, labour and maintenance expenses. He said returns from fishing activities remained under pressure, causing widespread dissatisfaction.

Janakiram demanded enhancement of diesel subsidy support, a review of charges levied through AFCOOP and effective implementation of the Matsyakara Bharosa scheme, alleging that some eligible beneficiaries had been left out.

He also raised concerns over harbour infrastructure, rising costs and migration of fishermen in search of employment. Fishermen’s organisations warned that they may launch statewide protests under the banner of “Fight for Our Rights” if their demands are not addressed.

The associations said they would continue consultations with political parties and stakeholders to press for measures aimed at improving the livelihoods of fishing communities.
