Five architect-designed luxury homes we love

Architects see things that others don’t: how a well-placed window can transform a room, how a curve instead of a corner can change how a space feels, or how moving a wall can make all the difference.

They can reimagine a period home that’s ready for a new lease on life, or create something stunning on a site where there was nothing. These are the architect-designed homes we love on the market now.

25 Oyster Bay Road, Oyster Bay NSW

Imagine waking up on the waterfront every day. This family home in Sydney’s Sutherland Shire features a striking curved roof, as well as practical details such as oversized windows to create a sunny kitchen and living space. The five-bedroom home was designed by Innovate Architects and is set in gardens that lead to the water and a jetty. The terraced decks that look out over the water are a highlight.

24 Glendearg Grove, Malvern VIC

Don’t be fooled by the classic facade: this Edwardian home in Melbourne’s Malvern has had a transformation by Lande Architects. The contemporary shape of the rear of the home includes an open-plan living and dining area framed by floor-to-ceiling glass, looking out to the swimming pool. The kitchen is a standout, with its Tanotti Green marble island.

4 Fingal Court, Cape Schanck VIC

No, this house isn’t floating, but yes, it does take full advantage of a secluded site on the Mornington Peninsula to be something special. Designed by Denton Corker Marshall, the home won the Robin Boyd Award in 2000, and has come back up for sale after the site last changed hands in 1997. Large windows frame views of the bush and ocean, as well as the nearby golf course. The living space and main bedroom are on the upper level, the other bedrooms are on the entry level and a courtyard separates them from a knockout home office.

38 Philip Street, Bondi NSW

It’s hard to know where to look first – the soaring ceilings, the kitchen that frames the home cook like they’re a star of the stage, or the lush garden. This Bondi house has architect Tim Greer to thank for its renovation, and it has kept the original period facade. It’s close to cafes and the beach.

4 Teven Street, Brunswick Heads NSW

Close to Byron Bay, this coastal home was transformed by architect Paul Uhlmann with gardens by Adam Robinson Design. The screens at the front of the home conceal an outdoor sitting area, while in the backyard there’s a swimming pool and firepit. The long kitchen bench is an ideal place to gather.
