Nalgonda: Five government hospitals in Bhadradri Kothagudem district have won six Kayakalp awards for 2025–26, with all five participating facilities securing recognition for improvements in cleanliness, infection control and patient care despite ageing buildings and infrastructure challenges. The assessment evaluates public healthcare facilities on cleanliness, sanitation, biomedical waste management, infection prevention, environmental sustainability and patient care.

The community health centre (CHC) at Palvancha won the state-level eco-friendly award and a commendation award. Area hospitals at Bhadrachalam, Manuguru, Yellandu and Aswaraopeta received commendation awards. Manuguru and Aswaraopeta hospitals secured recognition in their first participation in the assessment.

Dr G. Ravi Babu, district coordinator of hospital services (DCHS), told Deccan Chronicle that the awards followed sustained efforts by hospital staff to address problems in old buildings and improve services. Health secretary Dr Christina Z. Chongthu congratulated Dr Ravi Babu and his team.

“The assessment teams visited the hospitals in April 2026, and the awards were announced two days ago. This is not an overnight achievement. Staff worked hard to address issues such as fungus, cracks, plumbing and water supply, apart from improving maternity services and hospital cleanliness,” Dr Ravi Babu said.

He said the district had encouraged doctors to serve in tribal areas through incentives and had worked to improve institutional deliveries. The government hospitals under Telangana Vaidya Vidhana Parishad (TVVP) recorded 579 institutional deliveries in September, while Hyderabad recorded 1,016, he said.

Former collector Jithesh V. Patil had also highlighted the role of incentives, infrastructure improvements and staff commitment in strengthening maternal and child healthcare services in the district. Bhadradri Kothagudem ranked second in the state in institutional deliveries among districts with six facilities providing maternal and child healthcare services, compared with Hyderabad’s 15 facilities, according to the information shared by the former collector.

Dr Ravi Babu said the district would continue efforts to improve hospital quality, with plans to pursue ISO certification for Area Hospital, Bhadrachalam, and prepare for upcoming National Quality Assurance Standards (NQAS) assessments.
