WARANGAL: Multi-departmental flood mock drills were conducted across vulnerable areas in Hanamkonda and Warangal districts on Monday to assess emergency preparedness and response during natural disasters. The exercises simulated urban flooding, flash floods and rescue operations to evaluate real-time administrative response.

In Hanamkonda, the drill was carried out simultaneously at seven flood-prone locations between 8.30 am and 1 pm under the supervision of district collector Chahat Bajpai. As per National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) guidelines, rescue operations were conducted in TNGOs Colony Phase-2, Vivek Nagar, Sammaiah Nagar, Pragati Nagar, Gopalapuram Jawahar Colony and TV Tower Colony. Sirens were sounded and stranded residents were evacuated using lifeboats, ropes and stretchers.

At Vivek Nagar, drones were used to deliver food packets to residents stranded on rooftops before evacuation. Those rescued were shifted to a relief camp at SV Convention Hall in Sneha Nagar, where accommodation, drinking water and medical aid were arranged. A health team led by DMHO Dr Appaiah also simulated emergency treatment at the Urban Primary Health Centre in Lashkar Singaram.

Chahat Bajpai said, “The region has become highly vulnerable to urban flooding and flash floods, as witnessed over the last five years. The administration has shifted from a reactive fire-fighting approach to a proactive system of advanced planning and integrated coordination. An ‘Incident Command Post’ has been established to bring 12 essential departments under a single commander for rapid communication, rescue and medical response.”

A similar drill was conducted in Warangal from 8 am to 1 pm near Gundu Cheruvu, adjacent to Ekashila Park in Khila Warangal, under the supervision of district collector Satya Sharadha. Acting on a simulated red alert from the meteorological department, officials coordinated rescue operations and monitored implementation of safety measures.

Satya Sharadha visited the simulated flood zones in Yadava Wada, interacted with evacuees and oversaw their relocation to rehabilitation centres.

The drills involved participation from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), fire services, revenue, police and municipal departments, demonstrating preparedness to handle monsoon-related emergencies.
