Two-time retired NBA champion J.R. Smith was arrested in Hunt County (Texas) on a family violence charge, according to booking records.
The Hunt County Sherriff’s Office arrested Smith Tuesday, Sept. 29 and brought a charge of assault causing bodily injury, with no bond set. Smith, 41, remains in custody at the Hunt County Detention Center as of early Tuesday afternoon.

After retiring from the NBA, Smith enrolled at North Carolina A&T in 2021 to play on the University’s golf team. He graduated in May with a liberal studies degree.
Smith served 24 days in jail in 2007, stemming from a car crash in June of that year that killed his friend and passenger, Andre Bell. Smith pled guilty to reckless driving and was sentenced to 90 days in jail.

Later, in October 2017, Smith pled not guilty to allegations of reckless driving and excessive speeding in Bay Village, Ohio.
