Visakhapatnam:Former YSRC minister Dr Seediri Appala Raju was on Thursday remanded to 14 days’ judicial custody by the Munsif Magistrate Court in Palasa in connection with the investigation into a fatal road accident that occurred on July 10 in Kasibugga, Srikakulam district. He will be lodged in Ampolu Sub-Jail.
The Palasa police arrested Appala Raju on Wednesday, alleging that he attempted to tamper with evidence in the case. Police invoked provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 231 (giving false evidence) and Section 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder). His anticipatory bail plea had earlier been rejected by the court.
After hearing arguments from both sides, the magistrate remanded him to judicial custody for 14 days.
Tension prevailed outside the police station during the day as hundreds of YSRC supporters gathered in support of the former minister. Police imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 and detained several party workers, including Tekkali YSRC in-charge Tilak, for allegedly violating the restrictions. Former minister Dharmana Krishnadas also visited the area. Those detained were later released.
According to police, Appala Raju allegedly attempted to mislead the investigation into the July 10 accident, in which 45-year-old shepherd Danayya was killed. Police alleged that he tried to have another youth implicated instead of his son, Aarav Varma, whom investigators later identified as the rider involved based on CCTV footage.
Police further alleged that Appala Raju attempted to influence the victim’s family and tamper with evidence related to the case.
Earlier, Aarav Varma surrendered before the police and was remanded to judicial custody after video and CCTV footage allegedly linked him to the fatal accident. Investigators revised the case after initially registering it against another youth who had claimed responsibility for the crash.
